*Maifest is one of mankind’s oldest traditions – the celebration of nature’s bright reawakening after winter’s long, cold darkness. Traditional Maifest celebrations in Bavaria are never complete without Bock Biers, strong beers of German origin that are enjoyed during the spring transition from cold, snowy winters to balmy, sun-drenched summers along the northern Alps.

St. Louis, meet Black Lager. Available exclusively at STL bars, venues, and restaurants, Black Lager is an easy-drinking, darker cousin to Urban Underdog. Medium notes of toast and chocolate malt support a grainy malt character with moderately low hop bitterness and a crisp, clean finish. Look out for Black Lager throughout the St. Louis metro area, and join us at Black Lager release parties all this month!

Thank you everyone for coming out to help Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. celebrate our seventh anniversary and the spirit of craft beer in St. Louis at Wolpertinger 2018! A special thanks to our guest brewery, La Cumbre, who traveled all the way from Albuquerque to party with us. We also want to thank the 40+ local breweries who shared their brews with St. Louis beer fanatics, and the amazing musicians of St. Boogie Brass Band, Annie and the Fur Trappers, & Larry Hallar. Of course, no Wolpertinger festival would be complete without an appearance by Wolpi himself. The craft beer community in St. Louis and throughout Missouri is not just alive and well, it’s booming! We’re thrilled to be part of such a vibrant and passionate beer-making (and drinking) state!

If you didn’t get a chance to try Wolpertinger 2018, our Anniversary Bier, we have only a few kegs left. It will be available on tap at all three Urban Chestnut locations for a limited time! You can also pick up a 4-pack of last year’s Wolpertinger 2017 brew for $7.99 at our Grove location retail shop.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company was recently named one of the Environmental Protection Agency’s sixteen national WasteWise Award Winners for our sustainability efforts, earning Small Business Partner of the Year in 2017. The WasteWise program recognizes organizations ranging from small nonprofits to large multinational corporations that demonstrate significant effort to prevent and divert waste.

At UCBC, sustainability has been one of our core values since we opened our doors in 2011. This commitment has earned us the only LEED certification (silver) for a brewery in the state of Missouri. In the previous calendar year, we diverted or repurposed 96-97% of our waste, including nearly 1.1 million pounds of spent grain and 28,000 pounds of wood pallets. Last year we added spent yeast to our waste diversion efforts through a partnership with Center Ethanol in Sauget, IL. The partnership has prevented approximately 400,000 pounds of spent yeast from entering the municipal waste stream to date.

“This is yet another excellent example of the EPA partnering with communities and organizations to achieve environmental and economic benefits through waste prevention and management. The WasteWise award winners have exemplified tremendous environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility, and we commend their efforts,” said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.

Last year, WasteWise partners collectively prevented and recycled over 355,801 tons of waste, saving $17.7 million in avoided landfill fees. Since the program started 23 years ago, partners have diverted 8.5 million tons of waste that would have otherwise been disposed of in landfills or incinerators. These actions – which include waste prevention, recycling, composting, and donation – have offset over $400 million in avoided landfill fees.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s 8th Annual Oktoberfest St. Louis will run Friday, September 28th through Sunday, September 30th, 2018 at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave)!

*For the unacquainted, the Wolpertinger is a mythical German creature, similar to the American Jackalope, rumored to live in the Bavarian Black Forest. Witness accounts usually describe this nocturnal creature as having the body of a rabbit accompanied by wings, fangs, and antlers. Here at Urban Chestnut, we like to view this storied creature as a symbol for the Craft Beer Community in and around the St. Louis area. Just like the Wolpertinger, displaying distinctive traits from a variety of species, the breweries of St. Louis, who have their own distinctive niches and identities, come together on a rare afternoon in January to form one community of St. Louis brewers… And legend has it… that once you’ve enjoyed enough samples at the festival, you just might spot the actual beast!

Urban Chestnut’s 2017 Winter Warmer variety pack hits shelves this week. Any one of these beers is guaranteed to keep you warm on a cold winter’s day! This year’s pack includes:

Cherry Thrale’s (Russian Imperial Stout with Cherries) – Peter the Great loved English Stouts and requested them for the Russian Imperial courts. Unfortunately, the beer could not survive the long journey until 1796 when London brewery, Thrale’s, increased the alcohol content and hopping rate in their stout creating the Imperial Stout. As a nod to Peter and Thrale’s, we’ve “imperialized” this stout by fermenting it a bit further with sour cherries.

ABV: 9%
IBU: 50
OG: 22

Mapleator (Maple Bock) – While its name pays Reverence to the “ator” tradition of this historic, German style, we decided to Revolution-ize our take on it with the addition of maple syrup, adding even more complexity to the deep, rich, and toasty maltiness of this classic Bock Lager style.

ABV: 8%
IBU: 22
OG: 18.5

Wittewijven (Belgian Golden Ale) – Tales of Wittewijven, or “wise women”, date back to the 600s. Some say they were healers, others say they were pranksters. We’ve captured the Wittewijven contradiction, quite intentionally, with our Belgian Golden Ale – refreshing taste & aroma… sneaky little finish.

ABV: 9%
IBU: 28
OG: 17

Cocoa CowTao (Chocolate Milk Stout) – Tao- Chinese for ‘path’ or ‘way’. Should you follow the Cocoa CowTao of UCBC it will guide you to a place of confectionary, bovinic, and zymurgic fusion, where you will find fulfillment through the exquisite wisdom of Chocolate Milk Stout.

ABV: 5%
IBU: 30
OG: 13.5

Look out for the Winter Warmers in stores and on tap now… Open fire not required.

Named for the southern Ireland town boasting a Caribbean sister town of the same name, UCBC’s Export Stout, Kinsale, has become an Irish-perfected, Caribbean-loved style of beer. Historically generously hopped and full of roasted malt flavors, our version leans toward the creamy, sweet side of things.

Available in 4-packs and on tap now! Find out for yourself why Kinsale is an Urban Chestnut brewers’ favorite!

ABV: 7.0%
IBU: 27
OG: 17.3

In November, learn about the beginnings of Pilsner and how it spread throughout the world from UCBC Training Coordinator, Nate Brinson!

UCBC Speaker Series schedule:

Tuesday 11/7, 7 p.m. – How Geography Explains Pilsner… Or Pilsner Explains Geography – Nate Brinson, UCBC Training Coordinator

While Pilsner has its roots in Bohemia, it soon became a sensation that swept the globe. With an emphasis on physical, historical, and regional geography, learn about the beginnings of Pilsner in 1842, how it spread throughout the world, and how different beer cultures responded to Pilsner’s popularity.

Tuesday 9/19, 7 p.m. – From Bee to Bottle – Keith Seiz, National Honey Board

Celebrate National Honey Month by tracing honey’s origin from the bee to a bottle of beer. Learn all about bees and what makes honey one of the most unique and versatile natural sweeteners and beer ingredients. In this seminar, attendees will taste multiple rare honey varietals and sample made with honey beers.

Tuesday 7/18, 7 p.m. – Bottles to Bricks: Looking at Remnants from St. Louis Lagering Caves

Beneath the City of St. Louis are remnants of historic lagering caves that date back to as early as the 1840s. Over the past few years CAIRN (Cave Archaeology Investigation and Research Network) has established a collaborative relationship with local grottos and cave research groups, allowing them to visit and make records of several of these caves. Learn about their historical use gleaned from remaining artifacts.

The tradition continues Wednesday, October 18th at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave)! Enjoy the German horror classic, Nosferatu, scored live by the The Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra, with food and bier specials including Count Orlok, our Black Pumpkin Wheat Ale, ‘ghoulash’, and other spooky treats!

Festivities start at 6 p.m. for this family-friendly event. The movie starts after the sun has set and it’s safe for the Count to come out (and the projection can be seen!) around 7 p.m.

There might even be an appearance by the Count himself…

UCBC is excited to announce that for the next 7 weeks, we’re teaming up with Purina to give pet lovers a new way to support local shelter pets. For every specially marked 8-pack of 16oz cans of Urban Underdog (American Lager) sold at grocery and liquor stores in the St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, and Metro East areas, Purina will donate $3 to the Petfinder Foundation to help offset adoption fees. Popular Oktoberfest competitions like Masskrugstemmen (stein-holding contests) and Fingerhackeln (finger wrestling) will make a return, as will a great line-up of polka & oompah-thumping music from the Bolzen Beer Band, Die Spitzbaum, Dave Hylla’s Good Times Band, The Deutschmeister Brass Band, St. Louis Express, Larry Hallar, Uber Cool, and many more local, popular acts.

This year all food & bier must be purchased via the use of Oktoberfest tokens, valued at $6 apiece. The token system* is designed to cut down on lines by reducing transaction time. To save time and money, festival-goers are strongly encouraged to purchase Fest Packs in advance, which include (5) tokens and can be purchased for a discounted rate of $25 (a $30 value) through September 20th at the Grove Brewery & Bierhall or the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (online sales have ended). Oktoberfest steins may also be purchased for $12 or for a discounted rate of $10 when purchased with a Fest Pack in advance at either taste room. All other tokens must be purchased day-of-festival via cash-only. Gratuity and tax are included in the cost of tokens so there are no ‘extra expenses’ once tokens are purchased!

Token Values During Festival

One (1) Token =
One (1) 16 oz pour
OR
One (1) Small food item

Two (2) Tokens =
One (1) Commemorative Oktoberfest Stein
OR
One (1) Stein fill (one liter…approx. 33 oz)
OR
One (1) Large food item

Festival enthusiasts can also participate in a Twitter contest this year to win special VIP Fest Packages by tweeting the official Oktoberfest St. Louis hashtag “#OktoberfestSTL” along with ‘what they’re looking forward to most about this year’s fest’. The VIP Fest Packages include a commemorative Oktoberfest stein, five bier & food tokens, and a case of O-Katz 16 oz cans. Contest tweets must be published between August 23rd and September 11th and contestants must be following Urban Chestnut on Twitter to qualify. One entry per person per day. For more details see bit.ly/2wBfAdz.

UCBC-OKT-promo-web crop01

Entry is FREE at Oktoberfest St. Louis all three days. Sunday is traditionally considered “family day” and will feature a kids’ tent with Lebkuchen (cookie) decorating, music, coloring, and more!

*Rain Check or “I’ve had one too many” Plan – The goal of the token system is to enhance the overall festival experience and we want all Oktoberfest revelers to get the full bang for their buck. Thus, knock-on-wood, if poor weather hits OR anyone who has purchased tokens decides it’s time to pack it in for the day before using all of his/her tokens… rest assured knowing that from the end of the festival until December 1, 2017, one (1) token = one (1) draught bier on the menu at either our Midtown or Grove Brewery. Sorry no refunds.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Japan America Society of St. Louis, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. (4465 Manchester Ave) collaborated with Masumi Sake in Suwa, Japan (St. Louis’ sister city) to brew Konomi 好み, a Japanese Ale brewed with sake yeast. The Masumi Sake Brewery, operated by the Miyasaka family since 1662, discovered and isolated “Brewing Association Yeast Number Seven” the now widest used sake strain in the world, and sent Urban Chestnut their home yeast with which to brew the beer. Konomi 好み debuts Labor Day weekend at the Japanese Festival 2017 at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

In addition to using sake yeast and in homage to the Missouri Botanical Garden, Konomi was also brewed with small quantities of matcha, giving the beer a slight essence of the intense, powered green tea used in tea ceremony, but without overwhelming or competing with the fruity characteristics of the yeast. Rice was also used in a portion of the grain bill. The result is a light and refreshing ale perfect for the warm days of the Japanese Festival.

The name Konomi, agreed upon by Dave Lowry of the Japanese America Society and Katsuhiko Miyasaka, son of the current president and future successor of the Miyasaka Brewery, means “to like” or “to favour” in everyday parlance. However, from the tea ceremony comes a slightly different connotation, wherein konomi is a creative impulse that vivifies something in a new way.

The Japanese Festival takes place Saturday through Monday on Labor Day weekend at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Konomi will be available in the food court at the Japan America Society beer & sake booth.

O-Katz out of the bag! Urban Chestnut’s Brussels Beer Challenge Gold Medal Award-winning Oktoberfest Lager, Oachkatzlschwoaf, hits shelves August 1st in lidless 16 oz cans! No stein required!

This malty yet well balanced Märzen (Oktoberfest Lager) is easy to drink but difficult to pronounce. That’s why Oachkatzlschwoaf (“owah-kaatzl-sch-woaff”) is lovingly referred to as “O-Katz” by our staff… because only UCBC’s Bavarian-born Brewmaster can pronounce its name correctly. We all agree Bavarian humor can be… interesting.

Some beers are better with friends, which is why Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. collaborated on four new beers for our latest variety pack, the Collaboration Collection!

Urbangang (Belgian Lager) brewed with Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY

Florian & Phil are old brewing friends so it was only a matter of time before these Master Brewers came together to create two completely new beers. Ommegang brewed our German-style Doppelbock & fermented it with their Belgian house yeast, while we brewed Ommegang’s Belgian-style Dubbel & fermented it with our Zwickel yeast. Our expression… Urbangang… is a balanced combination of malt & spice aromas with a clean Lager finish.

ABV: 9%
IBU: 22
OG: 18.5 Plato

Xaver (Wheat Ale) brewed with Karmeliten Brauerei in Straubing, Germany

Thomas Eichenseher, Braumeister at Germany’s Karmeliten Brauerei, collaborated with UCBC to brew this Old Bavarian-style Wheat beer. Xaver, featuring a prominent banana aroma combined with a nutty, caramel malt flavor, is the first of many future collaborations with European breweries, helping us pay Reverence to our old-world roots.

ABV: 5.8%
IBU: 14
OG: 14 Plato

Urban King (Extra Cream Lager) brewed with Sun King Brewing in Indianapolis, IN

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together. Sitting in a Chestnut garden, collaborating with the Sun. I am the Lager, they are the Extra Cream. WE are the Urban King… coo coo cachoo ca coo coo cachoo.

ABV: 6.7%
IBU: 30
OG: 16 Plato

2011 B.C. (India Brown Ale) brewed with Civil Life Brewing Company, Perennial Artisan Ales, and 4 Hands Brewing Co. in St. Louis, MO

Back in 2011 a new St. Louis Brewers Class… aka 2011 B.C., was “born”. Five years later, the class got together to recognize their 5th “birthday” and while doing so created this India-style Brown Ale. Just like Civil Life & Perennial & Four Hands & Urban Chestnut… this beer has a little bit of something for everyone.

ABV: 6%
IBU: 55
OG: 15 Plato

Look out for the Collaboration Collection in stores and on tap now!

Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. brewed a new Single-Hop Pilsner in collaboration with Catherine Cares, a local organization working to uplift families of children facing devastating diagnoses. A percentage of every pour of this limited, draft-only release will support their endeavors. To put our signature on a project of “Pure Love”, we utilized only floral and spicy Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops, a treasured, centuries-old Bavarian variety. We feel this “noble hop” is perfect for such a noble cause.

Try it Tuesday, Feb. 21st when we take over the taps at Billy G’s, and look out for it on draught around town at:

Urban Chestnut’s 2016 Winter Warmer Variety Pack hits shelves this week, and it’s no misnomer. Any one of these beers is guaranteed to keep you warm on a cold winter’s night. This year’s pack includes:

Chouteau Joe (Coffee Stout) – Dear Auguste Chouteau, founding father of The STL, we toast to you today with a blend of two Saint Louis beverages: coffee from Kaldi’s and beer from UCBC. If you were here to raise a glass with us, you’d find a ‘namesake brew’ of a cold-steeped, savory coffee and a rich, creamy Stout ale.

ABV: 5.2%
IBU: 30
OG: 14.2

Mapleator (Maple Bock) – While its name pays Reverence to the “ator” tradition of this historic, German style, we decided to Revolution-ize our take on it with the addition of maple syrup, adding even more complexity to the deep, rich, and toasty maltiness of this classic Bock Lager style.

ABV: 8%
IBU: 22
OG: 18.5

Kinsale (Foreign Extra Stout) – Named for the southern Ireland town boasting a Caribbean sister town of the same name, this Foreign Export-style Stout has become an Irish-perfected, Caribbean-loved style of beer. Historically generously hopped and full of roasted malt flavors; our version leans toward the creamy, sweet side of things.

ABV: 7%
IBU: 27
OG: 17.3

Winterroggen (Roggenbier/Rye Ale) – This old school style features the banana and clove character and toasted bread notes found in classic Bavarian wheat beers, but as it also calls for the substitution of rye for wheat, the Roggenbier adopts extra spiciness & body – perfect for those sweater-wearing winter nights.

ABV: 5.5%
IBU: 14
OG: 13.5

Starting Wednesday (12/14) from 5-8 p.m., The U.R.B. (Urban Research Brewery), located at 4501 Manchester Ave, will operate weekly, Wed thru Sat from 5-8 p.m. Come sample small test batches of beer & help us evaluate them using our digital survey system accessed via your smart device. The U.R.B.’s pizza-by-the-slice counter is also open daily from noon – 8pm! We also have canned UCBC beers available to pair with your slice.

ICYMI: The U.R.B. is located right across the street from our Grove Brewery & Bierhall, where it will house a small pilot brewery, a consumer research bar area, and a small pizza-by-the-slice counter. The U.R.B.’s automated 2 bbl brewhouse will provide UCBC with the capability to brew very small batches of experimental beers. We will then take these test batches and invite beer drinkers to The U.R.B. to sample the beer and then digitally provide structured input/feedback. By capturing beer drinkers’ input through the simple connection of their cell phone, tablet, or other smart device to our survey platform, we will be able to tabulate and utilize data to help inform us in our decisions of what beers we might produce on a larger scale, for example. The feedback concept (or “contract” as we like to call it) is straightforward: for $1 a “surveyee” tests a flight of (3) or (4) two-ounce samples with the one requirement that the “surveyee” provides feedback on each of the beers via the engagement of our interactive digital platform.

Our plan in the beginning is to open the consumer research bar area on a semi-regular schedule, which we will actively communicate to potential new “surveyees” via social media, and directly communicate via e-mail and/or text to regular participants who choose to join our ‘U.R.B. Test Network’ (we are seeking to build a regular data-base of beer drinkers, aka the ‘U.R.B. Test Network’, to provide us with a consistent group of tasters who we will reward for joining our network and for regularly participating in our surveys).

Try the second half of the Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. & Brewery Ommegang collaboration exclusively at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave) Thursday, December 8th!

We’re tapping the first keg of Urbangang, a Belgian Doppelbock that uses Ommegang’s Abbey Ale recipe and our lager yeast! Collaboration 2016, which uses our Doppelbock recipe and Ommegang’s Belgian house yeast will also be available on tap and to take home in 4-packs.

Try both collaborations with special cheese pairings all day! Prost!

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company and Bissinger’s Chocolatier are teaming up to present a special beer and chocolate pairing fundraiser featuring (5) UCBC biers paired with (5) exquisite chocolates. All proceeds from this event will benefit Urban Harvest STL.

The event takes place on Sunday, December 4th at our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave), and representatives from both UCBC and Bissinger’s will be on hand to answer all of your beer and chocolate-related questions. There will be (2) tasting sessions with one beginning at 12pm along with another beginning at 3pm. Tickets for both sessions are available for purchase here. Space is limited so get your tickets while they last!

Urban Chestnut’s pizza-by-the-slice counter at The U.R.B. (Urban Research Brewery), located at 4501 Manchester Ave, is open daily from noon – 8pm! We also have canned UCBC beers available to pair with your slice. We hope to begin testing out our survey system and consumer research bar very soon once our small pilot brewery is up and running.

Even though our consumer research bar area doesn’t currently have a schedule, we’ve perfected our pizza dough and The U.R.B.’s space is open on a daily basis. We want beer drinkers and home brewers to be able to interact with our brewers throughout the test brewing process, so we have pizza-by-the-slice and some bottles & cans of UCBC beers available to entice folks to stop by.

Please join us for a special Dog Day Sunday on the east lawn at the Grove Brewery & Bierhall Sunday, November 6th from 1-4 p.m. to help raise funds urgently needed by Stray Rescue of St. Louis to combat a recent distemper outbreak.

Bring your pups and enjoy canned UCBC bier, live folk music by Three Crooked Men, and food provided by LuLu Dim Sum Food Truck!

50% of proceeds from the event will go toward Stray Rescue’s fundraising goal of $100K to save the lives of dogs affected by the outbreak. For more information see: strayrescue.org/helpdistemper and the Stray Rescue Distemper Fundraiser Facebook Event.

The Grove Brewery & Bierhall will be closed on Wednesday, November 2nd for a private event, so head over to the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington) for a yummy sandwich!

Support a different non-profit organization every Tuesday evening by drinking UCBC bier! Help out your local community by visiting Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave) between 5pm and 8pm on Tuesdays, and a percentage of beverage sales will be donated to that night’s featured organization. 1L stein fills are available!

If your 501c3 organization is interested in being featured during one of our Steins for Support nights, please contact events@urbanchestnut.com. Organizations may be featured once every six months, but reach out to us sooner so we can secure your date!

Pierre’s Wit honors a man who almost single-handedly resurrected a beer style, the Belgian Wit – a deliciously refreshing wheat beer originally created by Belgian farmers in the Middle Ages. Spring has sprung! Come celebrate with us at Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. as we host our annual

Maifest* 2016

Saturday, May 14th from 12-10 p.m. at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave)

Maifest 2016 will feature:

– BBQ from UCBC and guests
– A UCBC full Bock Bier lineup including our new Maibock Gewässerschutz, Maximilian, Erlkönig, Oxnbräu, Urbanator, and more

$18 festival package includes a commemorative glass and 3 beer & food tickets
Individual beer & food tickets may be purchased for $6 at the event (beer and food must be redeemed with tickets)

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company will host a sustainability meeting with St. Louis area breweries and the St. Louis Brewers Guild on Thursday, April 21st from 6-9 p.m. at the Grove Brewery & Bierhall (located at 4465 Manchester Ave) to discuss sustainable brewing practices and the increasing impact of climate change on the quality and availability of ingredients needed to brew beer. A “Declaration of Sustainability” will be signed by all participating breweries and the St. Louis Brewers Guild, who also called upon many local communities, businesses, and policy makers to take action in both promoting sustainability and reducing climate change.

“Sustainability may sound like a buzzword, but it really is a critical element for those of us involved in brewing beer,” said Alvan Caby, Sustainability Coordinator at Urban Chestnut. “We work with farmers and utilize natural ingredients, so we feel that doing whatever we can to employ sustainable practices is important to the existence of our industry.”

A special “Earth Day Beer” was even created by Urban Chestnut for the event. A portion of sales of Gewässerschutz, a Maibock whose name roughly translates to “water protection,” will go to the Missouri Coalition for the Environment.

Thursday’s event will feature several guest speakers as well as an open forum for brewers to share their ideas, suggestions, and personal sustainability practices. Urban Chestnut, Old Bakery, The St. Louis Brewers Guild, and other St. Louis area breweries attending the event will cap it off by signing the St. Louis Brewers Declaration on Sustainability and Climate, a document pledging to strive for sustainability and to call on policy makers to support policies like the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan.

Sustainability is a core part of Urban Chestnut’s ‘Urban Efforts’ initiative, which champions environmental responsibility and positive contributions to the community and City of St. Louis. Last year Urban Chestnut’s Grove Brewery & Bierhall received the 2015 Governor’s Metropolitan Community/Redevelopment Project of the Year Award and became the first LEED certified brewery in the state of Missouri. This year, through the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and energy generated by on-site solar panels, UCBC has begun offsetting 100% of their energy usage (up from 38% in 2014). Also new in 2016 are an Urban Garden and a beekeeping operation at the Grove Brewery & Bierhall, which will both be used to directly source the beer & food Urban Chestnut serves to their customers.

Join us at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company to usher in the arrival of biergarten season at our 2nd annual Crawfish Boil at the Midtown Brewery and Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave) on Saturday, April 23rd & Sunday, April 24th!

Chow down on all-you-can-eat Crawfish Boil and Chicken Andouille Gumbo! Our Crawfish Boil is a traditional Cajun mix of crawfish, potatoes, corn, andouille sausage, mushrooms, and onions. This year’s event will consist of three all-you-can-eat sessions: two on Saturday from 12-2 p.m. & 3-5 p.m and one on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. Spaces are limited to 150 per session.

Should we have extra crawfish boil and gumbo after the 2nd session on Saturday ends at 5 p.m. and after Session 3 on Sunday ends at 3 p.m., we’ll offer 1/2 lbs of crawfish for $15.99 & cups of gumbo for $7.99 each to the general public.

Beer specials include 16 oz. pours of Zwickel, Schnickelfritz, and Dorfbier for $4 and Fantasyland for $5. Our full beer menu will be available in the Taste Room.

Music provided Saturday by Zydeco Crawdaddys and Sunday by Rusty Nail!

Let’s just say this boil’s gonna be ‘cray’! Santé!

*Ticket-holders only will be allowed in the Biergarten from 12-5 p.m. on Saturday and from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets ordered online are will call only and we will have your name and number of tickets ordered on a list at the door. Physical tickets will NOT be mailed.

Tickets are sold out for this year’s Crawfish Boil! Thank you everyone!! We’ll see you April 23rd and 24th! Come hungry!

Let the new Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. variety pack, the Belgian Brew Box, help make the transition from winter to spring even easier. Look out for it on shelves this week!

Mercator (Flemish Sour) – Gerardus Mercator was an actual renaissance man; philosopher, mathematician, cartographer… crafting the world map of 1569. And like this Flemish Red, which went from brewhaus, to fermenter, to various oak barrels, to finishing tank… Mercator, too, spent much of his life aboard many vessels.

ABV: 6.3%
IBU: 15
OG: 14.0 Plato

Wittewijven (Belgian Golden Ale) – Tales of Wittewijven, or “wise women”, date back to the 600s. Some say they were healers, others say they were pranksters. We’ve captured the Wittewijven contradiction, quite intentionally, with our Belgian-Style Golden Ale – refreshing taste & aroma… sneaky little finish.

ABV: 8.9%
IBU: 28
OG: 17.5 Plato

Geiles Bier (Belgian Pale Ale) – We brewed this Belgian-style Pale Ale to celebrate the tenth anniversary of a local St. Louis farmer’s market and as such, we knew we had to make something unique. To accomplish this (and to honor local farmers) we incorporated a small amount of corn into the grain bill, adding a subtle, sweet smoothness to the spicy hop and yeast character of this Pale Ale, making it truly a Geiles (awesome) Bier!

ABV: 5.6%
IBU: 25
OG: 13.0 Plato

De Bockle (Belgian Ale) – Ah there once was a Belgian from Uccle, who liked to eat frites with his broth full of cockle. And though he was from near Ghent, and liked his grain well spent. His brewing ability matched his name of De Bockle. (This beer though is actually pretty darn good).

ABV: 11.0%
IBU: 26
OG: 22.0 Plato

Hopfenfest 2016 is Sunday, March 20th at the Urban Chestnut Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave. 63103)! Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC) is excited to announce plans to open “The U.R.B.” (short for The Urban Research Brewery), which will be a consumer research & pilot brewery in The Grove.

Late in 2015, UCBC reached a lease agreement for a portion of the 4501 Manchester Ave property, with Restoration St. Louis, a St. Louis based real estate developer who’s been very active in development of The Grove, aka Forest Park Southeast neighborhood.

4501 Manchester is 3,500 sq. ft. located at the NW corner of Taylor & Manchester, which is directly across the street from UCBC’s 70,000 sq. ft. Grove Brewery & Bierhall, located at 4465 Manchester. The U.R.B., which was designed by the Grove firm, Space Architecture + Design, will house a small pilot brewery, a consumer research bar area, and a small pizza-by-the-slice counter. The 2 bbl pilot brewery will be the centerpiece of the location and will provide Urban Chestnut with the capability to brew very small batches of experimental beers. It will be accompanied by a consumer research bar area where beer drinkers will be able to provide instantaneous feedback on test beers via their cell phones, tablets, or other ‘smart’ devices.

“Two things our brewers have never been able to effectively do: 1.) brew small test batches and 2.) interact directly with beer drinkers regarding experimental beers”, said Florian Kuplent, UCBC Co-Founder & Brewmaster. “Having a small pilot brewery adjacent to our production brewery will provide our brewers the ability to create, research, and develop new beers that may ultimately end up in the UCBC portfolio.”

It’s important to Urban Chestnut to receive a lot of feedback regarding their experimental beers. In order to achieve this objective, UCBC is ensuring their research component is accessible to beer drinkers. As such, The U.R.B. will be open daily, offering “test flights” of (4) two-ounce samples for $1, with the one requirement that the “surveyee” provide feedback via an interactive digital platform. After that, if any of the “surveyees” would like to enjoy any of UCBC’s test batches further (or other select UCBC beers), a regular-sized pour will be offered at a standard price… if there is ample supply. “We want The U.R.B. to be a place where anyone; home brewers, beer aficionados, and beer drinkers in general, can easily provide qualitative & quantitative input on our experimental beers, but we also want The U.R.B. to be a place where these same folks can hang out, drink beer, grab a slice, and engage in conversations about brewing or anything else. Additionally, it will provide UCBC with an ideal location to host taste panels, home brewer discussions, focus groups, etc.”, stated David Wolfe, UCBC Co-Founder.

The U.R.B. launch date is pending delivery of Urban Chestnut’s European pilot brewery and on federal and local licensing, all of which should be finalized this spring.

The tradition continues October 28th at the UCBC Midtown Brewery & Biergarten with Nosferatu! Enjoy this cult classic with musical accompaniment from the The Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra and food & bier specials, including Count Orlok, our Black Pumpkin Wheat Ale, and the debut of Grande Pumpion, our Honey Imperial Pumpkin Milk Stout!

See our Count Orlok YouTube video!

*In the event of rain, the screening will be moved into the Midtown Barrel Room event space.

Since 2011, Urban Chestnut has celebrated Oktoberfest St. Louis at our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten through the enjoyment of German food, German games, German music, and of course German bier – it gives us a way to bring a bit of Florian’s homeland to St. Louis. With this year’s festival being our 5th Annual, we’re going to ramp things up a bit, and really capture the convivial tradition and atmosphere of the Munich Oktoberfest.

Each year, Oktoberfest St. Louis attendance has doubled from the previous year, so we figured we’d extend the festival by a day. Stretching from Friday, September 25th through Sunday, September 27th, the 5th Annual Oktoberfest St. Louis will be UCBC’s first-ever three day festival.

Oktoberfest St. Louis 2015 will offer much of the typical German/Bavarian cuisine enjoyed at the world famous Munich Oktoberfest, most notably bratwurst, roasted chicken, and giant pretzels. Additionally, Urban Chestnut will provide festival-goers the opportunity to participate in traditional Oktoberfest games and activities, including:

-Stein Holding Competition (Masskrugstemmen)
-Finger wrestling (Fingerhackeln)
-Playground rides
-And more

A major and fundamental component of any Oktoberfest is German music. Here’s the complete music schedule for Oktoberfest St. Louis 2015:

Friday (9/25)
Bolzen Beer Band – 7pm-10pm

Saturday (9/26)
– Stage 1-
Larry Hallar – 12pm-3pm
ÜberCool – 4pm-7pm
Bolzen Beer Band – 9pm-11pm
– Stage 2-
Wendl Band – 2pm-5pm
Bolzen Beer Band – 8pm-9pm

Sunday (9/27)
– Stage 1-
Dave Hylla’s Good Time Band – 12pm-3pm
Deutschmeister Brass Band – 4pm-7pm
– Stage 2-
Larry Hallar – 2pm-5pm

But of course Oktoberfest St. Louis wouldn’t be considered an Oktoberfest without German bier! And this year’s selection will be the broadest yet with Urban Chestnut pouring four of our traditional German biers: Oachkatzlschwoaf (Annual Oktober-Festbier), Zwickel (Bavarian Lager), Schnickelfritz (Weissbier), and Dorfbier (Dunkel), along with a few other ‘UCBC surprises’. There will also be German bier offerings from St. Louis craft brewers: Schlafly Oktoberfest, The Civil Life Oktoberfest, and 4 Hands Dry-Hopped Kölsch. Just as the Munich Oktoberfest brings Munich’s breweries together, we’re proud to have our friends from Schlafly, The Civil Life, and 4 Hands join us at Oktoberfest St. Louis 2015.

Entry is free at Oktoberfest St. Louis 2015. Festival goers may buy an authentic 1 liter glass stein for $8 prior to the festival ($10 day of), and steins may be filled at the festival for $8. As is true at Munich Oktoberfest, there’s something for everyone, families are welcome, and UCBC considers Sunday afternoon “Family Day”.

Urban Chestnut’s German Pilsner, Stammtisch, was recently awarded Grand Champion in the Pilsner category at USBTC’s Summer Beer Competition! Out of 655 entries, Stammtisch was one of sixteen beers to win Grand Champion status. Other Grand Champions include Cigar City Brewing’s Hoppier than Helles and Sam Adams Rebel Rider IPA.

Our Zwickel (Dortmunder/Helles) and Ku’damm (Sour Beer) were also awarded Best of the Midwest for their respective categories! Check out the full competition results here.

Oachkatzlschwoaf, Urban Chestnut’s Oktober-Festbier, is available in bottles and on draft, and it will be our feature beer at Oktoberfest St. Louis. But how do you say this Bavarian word? We asked a few of our guests in this YouTube video. Enjoy!

Don’t worry, it’s easier to drink than it is to say!

Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall Recognized & Awarded by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon Urban Chestnut Brewing Company is pleased and honored to announce they are the recipients of the 2015 Governor’s Metropolitan Community/Redevelopment Project of the Year Award. During a luncheon this past Thursday, September 3rd at Union Station in Saint Louis, MO, Urban Chestnut and Green Street St. Louis, Urban Chestnut’s real-estate development partner, were presented the prestigious award by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon during the 2015 Governor’s Conference on Economic Development.

In February 2014, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC), in conjunction with Green Street St. Louis, an innovative real estate firm recognized for the sustainable redevelopment of underutilized St. Louis area commercial properties, opened the Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall, which is located in St. Louis’ Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, aka The Grove.

The 70,000 square foot Grove Brewery & Bierhall, which had once housed the Renard Paper Company, features a 450 person bierhall, a state-of-the-art brew house, a fermentation hall, a packaging hall, a warehouse, and it provides Urban Chestnut with the capacity to brew approximately 30,000 barrels of beer annually. Earlier this year, in February, the building became the state’s first LEED Certified brewery (just one of a handful of brewers nationally) featuring a solar panel array, easy access to public transportation, indoor bike storage, and an assortment of other energy saving features. These features along with other sustainability efforts and economic achievements resulted in Urban Chestnut winning the 2015 Metropolitan Community /Redevelopment Project of the Year Award, which recognizes the best example of a community/redevelopment project that demonstrated a significant impact on a metropolitan neighborhood or community.

“It’s a great honor to receive the Governor’s Metro Community/Redevelopment Project of the Year Award,” said David Wolfe. “By sustainably renovating an existing building, we were able to quickly move into our facility, significantly grow our business, and remain true to our ‘Urban Efforts’ – of environmental responsibility and positive contributions to the community and City of St. Louis.”

“Opening the Grove Brewery & Bierhall was obviously a big feat for Urban Chestnut, but it also enhanced the economic development within The Grove neighborhood, the City of St. Louis, and the State of Missouri” stated Florian Kuplent. “Having Governor Nixon and Missouri’s Department of Economic Development recognize our impact is truly an honor.”

Some of the energy efficient highlights of the Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall project:

  • 100 percent of the building structure retained
  • 41 percent reduction in Lighting Power Density from baseline
  • Employee and indoor customer bike parking
  • 97 percent use of ENERGY STAR equipment
  • 64 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills
  • 36 percent reduction in water usage from baseline
  • 900,000 kWh of clean energy purchased per year to offset carbon emissions
  • 25kW solar panel array1
  • 100+ new jobs created

Other Governor’s award winners:
• Sherry Turner, founder of OneKC for Women – Missouri Women’s Council Award of Distinction.
• Denny Coleman, CEO, STL Econ. Dvlpmnt. Partnership – Career Service in Economic Development Award
• Rug Doctor Inc., – Innovative Industry Training Award
• TK Architects International Inc., Kansas City – Exporter of the Year Award
• Clearview Window Cleaning, Springfield – Minority or Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year Award
• John Engelmann, manager of economic development for KCP&L – Hawthorn Foundation Volunteer Economic Development Award
• Jim Eberlin, CEO of St. Louis-based startup TopOPPS Inc. – Entrepreneur of the Year Award
• Owens Corning, Joplin – Business Project of the Year Award

Celebrate the home stretch of summer with cans of Urban Chestnut’s flagship lager! For a limited time, Zwickel is on shelves in 16 oz. cans: Bavarian Lager meets the American Tallboy!

In Paste Magazine’s Session Beer Tasting, Schnickelfritz, UCBC’s Bavarian Weissbier, took 2nd place of 90 beers! This is the second time Schnickelfritz has been highly-rated in Paste’s tastings, taking second place in the “Best American Wheat Beers” tasting.

Introducing Urban Chestnut’s Sweet-Tart Variety Pack, including three first time bottled beers! Whether you prefer sweet or tart, these 8 beers are perfect for any taste – in stores now!

Perdedor: Perdedor is a “tribute beer” to a classic 90s alt-rock hit. Sip, sing, enjoy- “Soy un perdedor…I’m a Lemon-lime Lager so please don’t spill me…got a couple of couches…sleep on the love seat”.

Bären Weisse: Swirl it, waft it, now close your eyes and think strawberry. Ahhh! There it is! And yes, it is subtle, but the “beeren” in the weissbier provide a soft aroma and light sweetness on the tongue. The addition of strawberry to this wheat beer makes for a wonderfully refreshing summer ale.

Ku’damm: Drink it ‘straight’ to appreciate the light tartness…Or repeat these words “Ich bin ein Berliner” and add a bit of elderflower, raspberry, or black currant syrup just as they do along Kurfürstendamm.

BAP: BAP has a double meaning. It’s UCBC’s interpretation of the classic bier style from the city of Köln…Kölsch… and it’s the name of the most famous rock band that calls Köln its home. The bier (not the band) is a warm-fermented golden ale, that is then cold-conditioned, taking on many characteristics of a lager.

Burger Sunday at the Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall is now Burger and Bier Sunday! Every week, Chef Andy will choose a beer to pair with Sunday’s burger offering! Guten Appetit und Prost!

Traditionally in Bavarian Biergartens, it is common to see people with a picnic basket full of tomatoes, radishes, cheese, cured sausage, and pickles. At our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten, we’ll make a picnic basket for you! We also have brats, kebobs, huge pretzels and more!

IMG_3060
In the Biergarten, there is only one type of glass, the Krug. In Bavaria, the “normal” size of every beer in Biergartens is 1 liter! We offer Maßkrüge (1 liter steins), but we also offer .5L Krüge. These glasses are designed to fit well in your hand, and the thickness of the glass helps keep the beer from warming up too quickly, which is especially helpful in the St. Louis summer! Steins are nice, which means they have a way of disappearing so it is customary in Bavaria to charge a glassware deposit. At UCBC, we charge a deposit of $12 per .5L stein and $15 for 1L liter steins. If you open a tab with a credit card, we will remove the charge when you return your glasses. Of course, if you’d like to take one home, we’ll simply keep the deposit, and you’ll have a nice stein for drinking UCBC bier at home!

IMG_1162
Equality reigns in the Biergarten. People from all walks of life and cultures in Bavaria come together to enjoy the Biergarten! According to the Bavarian Biergarten Ordinance, “Biergartens fulfil important social and communicative functions” so don’t be afraid to chat with Tischnachbarn (people at your table)!

 IMG_3056

And don’t forget to toast (with eye contact) everyone at the table. It adds to the friendly atmosphere, and don’t worry: the sturdy Biergarten will hold up to a mighty toast!

Is it Spring??? Is it Summer??? At UCBC, it’s Biergarten Season!!!

We’ll celebrate every weekend at our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten with German music from John Koenig, St. Louis Express, Larry Hallar, Deutschmeister Brass Band, ÜberCool, and making their return to St. Louis, the Bolzen Beer Band!

And don’t forget German food and, of course, UCBC bier!

Prost to the BEST season of them all!

A little over four months ago, in January, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co., a craft brewer located in St. Louis, MO, acquired a small German brewery that was previously operated as Bürgerbräu Wolnzach in Florian Kuplent’s (Urban Chestnut’s Co-Founder & Brewmaster) homeland of Bavaria. Wolnzach, a small town situated in the world’s largest hops producing region, the Hallertau, is now the home of Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei.

Since this past winter’s acquisition, Urban Chestnut has been busy setting up its Hallertauer operation. A Head Brewer, and a Sales Manager have both been locally hired to assist in the operations of their Hallertauer Brauerei. And just two weeks ago, UCBC’s first batches of bier were brewed in Germany.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have assembled a staff, and almost unbelievable to have brewed Urban Chestnut bier in Bavaria,” expressed Kuplent. “It’s very fulfilling to see a lifelong dream become reality!”

Urban Chestnut will initially brew three beers at their Hallertauer Brauerei: Zwickel – Urban Chestnut’s Flagship Bavarian Lager, its top U.S. seller, Zuagroast – a new Pale Ale brewed with Bavarian malt and hops, and Hopfenperle, a new, hop-forward, Helles Lager that is based on a recipe from another old Bavarian brewery, Alterbräu Wolnzach. UCBC’s German-brewed biers will all fall under a new, third series of Urban Chestnut’s beers; Hallertauer Serie, which joins UCBC’s Revolution Series and UCBC’s Reverence Series.

“The Hallertauer Serie beers exemplify the philosophy of the Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei,” stated Kuplent. “While we purposefully utilize high-quality, terroir-specific ingredients from Bavaria to honor the bier tradition of Hallertau, we also incorporate some modern-American brewing ideals.”

Urban Chestnut, which has been exporting small quantities of their St. Louis-made beers to Germany since 2013, will continue this practice, and now, conversely, UCBC will also be importing their Bavarian-brewed biers into the United States.

“Our Hallertauer Brauerei will obviously enhance UCBC’s efforts to expand our distribution in Germany and into other parts of Europe, via the production of locally brewed beer. Additionally, it will provide us with a central point of importation for our St. Louis-brewed Revolution & Reverence Series of beers,” said fellow Co-Founder David Wolfe. “But what’s perhaps even more exciting, is the exportation of our Hallertauer Serie into the U.S. Overall, on the marketing side, there are going to be a lot of unique and exciting things we can do as an American- German/German-American importing-exporting craft brewer.”

In June, the Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei will begin distributing bier locally in Bavaria and to other areas of Germany, as well continuing the local tradition of selling bottles, on-site, to visiting customers.

“We’ve already pre-sold our first few batches of our Hallertauer Brauerei bier, which in essence is helping us to expand Urban Chestnut’s presence across the overall German brewing scene. On a personal level though, I’m most excited about the opportunity for local, Bavarian bier enthusiasts to enjoy Urban Chestnut bier” shared the Bavarian born Kuplent.

Biergarten Season is in full swing at at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten, so celebrate your Memorial Day Weekend with UCBC! Perfect your Biergartening skills on Friday (5/22) at 4pm with the accordion music of Larry Hallar followed by the toe-tapping Swing of Wack-A-Doo! Driving to Maifest? There’s plenty of non-metered parking on Washington and Locust. You can also take Metro or ride your bike!

For more details, please refer to the Maifest 2015 poster below…

*Maifest is one of mankind’s oldest traditions, the celebration of nature’s bright reawakening after Winter’s long, cold darkness. At some point, what was an ancient pagan festival took on Christian religious significance and is now a colorful, joyous part of history and culture that is celebrated annually, not only in Bavaria, but in many towns around the world.

** Bockbiers, essentially strong beers of German origin, are traditionally the ideal biers to enjoy in Bavaria during the brief Spring transition (the period between the cold, snowy Winters and the balmy, sun-drenched Summers) along the northern Alps. We’ll be featuring FOUR bockbiers at our Maifest…a Weizenbock – Maximillian, a Doppelbock – Oxnbräu, a Belgian Style Bock – De Bockle and of course our annual Maibock – Urbanator.

*** In 2012 Urban Chestnut opened our Midtown Biergarten; a large Bavarian-style biergarten lined with German tables, benches and umbrellas. The idea was/is simple: we want to provide an outdoor destination to gather and converse over a beer, a pretzel and/or a brat and to recreate the feel of the communal atmosphere of what has existed in Bavaria for centuries and what was a large part of St. Louis’ Spring, Summer & Fall routine in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Prost!

Spring has sprung, and Urban Chestnut’s Box of Bocks will put a SPRING in your step! Our newest Variety Pack features FOUR Bock biers making their debut in bottles, and they will hit the shelves THIS WEEK! Prost to new beginnings and Bock biers!

Urbanator: UCBC’s Maifest Bier gives a nod to the tradition of the German annual rite of Spring, but as a Pale Doppelbock it fundamentally changes the “ator” style of Bock Biers in our own, explicitly Urban way.

De Bockle: Ah there once was a Belgian from Uccle, who liked to eat frites with his broth full of cockle. And though he was from near Ghent, and liked his grain well spent. His brewing ability matched his name of De Bockle. (This beer though is actually pretty darn good).

Maximilian: Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria, was responsible for the permittance of wheat being used in German brewing. As such, we pay our respects to old Max with this traditional Weizenbock ~ a Bock Bier brewed with both wheat malt and a Weiss(wheat)bier yeast strain.

Oxnbräu: When considering the physical attributes of an Ox, one might use similar words to describe this traditional Doppelbock. While we can’t (technically) describe this beer using those powerful adjectives, we can say it’s quite likely you’ll also enjoy this Lager Bier for its sweet & malty character.

Introducing the Urban Chestnut Box of Bocks! Our newest Variety Pack features FOUR first-time bottled Bock biers, just in time to celebrate the arrival of Spring! Look for them on shelves in the next few weeks AND at our Maifest celebration on May 9th…keep checking back for updates!

As such, our inaugural Crawfish Boil is happening this Saturday, April 4th, at our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten!

In addition to classic Cajun cuisine, we’ll have Schlossturm, our Altbier, and Barbe Rouge, our NEW Dry-Hopped Farmhouse Ale, on tap for the first time in 2015!

We love to pay homage to our Bavarian heritage, but we’re allowed to be Irish once a year along with everyone else, right? Sure we are! We’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at the Grove Brewery & Bierhall a little bit differently this year by showing all (that’s right, ALL) of the classic, horror films, Leprechaun – paired with tasty Irish fare, of course.

And from 7pm-10pm, dance a jig to the Celtic rock sounds of Rusty Nail, and grab a pint of O’Florian’s, back on tap for the first time in two years! With its roasty and smooth character, our traditional, nitrogenated Irish Dry Stout makes us wonder if brewmaster Florian Kuplent actually hails from the Emerald Isle!

Get out your green garb, don your derby hats, and grab an O’Florian’s on St. Paddy’s Day at the Grove Brewery & O’Bierhall!

Prost!…er…Sláinte!

On February 28, 2014 , our Grove Brewery & Bierhall opened its doors! In that time, we’ve brewed copious amounts of beer, achieved LEED Silver Certification, and most importantly, have been able to share in great times with the St. Louis beer community.

Thank you for an amazing year!

Prost!

We know the impending work week can be daunting, so we’re staying open later on Sundays! Beginning Sunday, Mar. 1st, the Grove Brewery & Bierhall will be open until 9pm –looks like the weekend just got a little bit longer!

And if you need another reason to celebrate Sundays at the Grove, mad genius Andrew Fair will be offering a burger & fries special EVERY Sunday featuring a different style of burger (made from our own house ground meat) every week. Supplies are limited so get them while they’re hot… and don’t forget the bier!

Guten Appetit und Prost!

In February 2014, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company opened their second brewery, Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall, located in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, aka The Grove. During the planning stages of opening their new Grove Brewery & Bierhall, and as part of the company’s commitment to sustainability, Wolfe and Kuplent decided to pursue LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification. To accomplish this goal, Urban Chestnut partnered with Green Street St. Louis, an innovative real estate firm recognized for the sustainable redevelopment of underutilized St. Louis-area commercial properties into LEED certified buildings.

The 70,000 square foot Grove Brewery & Bierhall, which once housed the Renard Paper Company, features a 450 person bierhall, brew house and fermentation hall with about 20,000 bbls of annual brewing capacity, as well as a packaging hall and warehouse. As part of the building’s sustainably-focused renovation, brick walls were removed and replaced with glass windows in both the bierhall and fermentation hall not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to utilize natural light. It also features a solar panel array, easy access to public transportation, bike storage, and an assortment of other energy saving features, all of which help reduce fossil fuel costs and the carbon footprint of the brewery and its customers.

These features and other improvements have resulted in Urban Chestnut achieving a LEED Silver Certification for the Grove Brewery & Bierhall, making it the first LEED Certified brewery in the state of Missouri.

“Achieving LEED Certification is a big thrill for us, as it was one of our core objectives when we decided to build the Grove Brewery & Bierhall,” said David Wolfe. “By sustainably renovating an existing building, not only were able to quickly move into a facility, which consequently allowed us to grow our business without interruption, but we were also able to stay true to our principles of environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”

“Bringing the Grove Brewery & Bierhall to life was a win-win for Urban Chestnut,” stated Florian Kuplent. “It has allowed us to greatly increase our brewing capacity in a more sustainable and responsible manner.”

“The certification is proof that not only is UCBC brewing great beer, but great beer in a great building!” said Rob Maltby, Green Street St. Louis, LEED AP ID+C, Project Manager. “The whole team came together and worked from the get-go to create an energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing building. Urban Chestnut serves as a showcase for the City of St. Louis on how a reuse of a building can really impact a neighborhood (The Grove) positively for the future.”

Last year, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC), a St. Louis, MO craft brewery founded and operated by two former Anheuser-Busch employees, Florian Kuplent and David Wolfe, opened their second brewery, Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall, located in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, aka The Grove. And just last month, they announced plans to open a third brewery later this year, Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei, in the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Wolnzach, Germany.

As Missouri’s third largest craft brewery, Urban Chestnut had been previously constrained by its capacity and limited to distributing their beers primarily to the St. Louis metro area, but with about 30,000 bbls of annual brewing capacity now on-line, the new operation in the Grove has allowed Urban Chestnut to expand its brewing output, and provide the brewery with the ability to increase its distribution footprint.

Last year, the company took advantage of their new capacity by expanding distribution to Columbia, Jefferson City and Kansas City, MO. This week, Urban Chestnut is preparing to open up the Chicago market.

“We’ve been seriously interested in selling our beers in Chicago for quite a while,” said David Wolfe. “We’re thrilled to be entering a market with such a hyper-dynamic brewing scene; a craft beer market with lots of local breweries, a constant stream of new entries, and an abundance of avid and knowledgeable beer drinkers.”

Urban Chestnut will be partnering with Lakeshore Beverage Company, Illinois’ largest distributor, to distribute their beers in Chicago.

“Lakeshore is a first-class operation, with a lot of talented people,” remarks Jon Shine, Urban Chestnut’s Head of Sales Operations. “Their commitment to growing craft beer in the Chicago area and belief in Urban Chestnut makes them an ideal partner for us.”

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s brewing philosophy centers around Beer Divergency—a ‘new world meets old world’ brewing approach wherein UCBC contributes to the “revolution” of craft beer through creations of artisanal, modern American beers, and pays “reverence” to the heritage of beer with offerings of classically- crafted, timeless European beer styles.

“Chicago has a very competitive craft beer scene; however, there is a thirst for these styles of beers that Urban Chestnut brews… beers that are full of flavor, classic styles, refreshing and drinkable. That’s just one of the reasons we are excited to bring Urban Chestnut to Chicago,” said Ted Champion, Import/Craft Manager of Lakeshore Beverage.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC) is an unconventional-minded yet tradition-oriented brewer of craft beer. Founded in early 2011 UCBC operates two breweries; Midtown Brewery & Biergarten at 3229 Washington Avenue in Midtown St. Louis and Grove Brewery & Bierhall at 4465 Manchester in Forest Park Southeast St. Louis, where it brews both small batches of artisanal, modern American beers (their Revolution series) and classically-crafted European styles (their Reverence series). It will open a third brewery, Urban Chestnut Hallertauer Brauerei, in the Hallertau region of Bavaria later in 2015. The founders: Florian Kuplent- a German born and trained brewmaster with extensive experience at both small breweries, worldwide, and with the world’s largest, Anheuser-Busch, AND David Wolfe – a 20-year brewing industry member, who was also with Anheuser-Busch, prior to joining Kuplent in founding Urban Chestnut.

ABOUT LAKESHORE BEVERAGE

The Hand Family Company has been in business since the 1940s, and to this day, remains family owned and operated. With the recent formation of Lakeshore Beverage, the Company is excited to enter the Chicago market to share one of the country’s finest portfolios of beers. From world renowned labels such as Duvel to local favorites like Goose Island Beer Co. to the number one selling beer in the U.S., Bud Light, Lakeshore Beverage is dedicated to telling each brewer’s story and to cultivating access to their beers in unique and compelling ways. Lakeshore Beverage attributes its recent growth to a commitment to developing the finest employees who work closely with brewery partners and customers to create memorable opportunities to enjoy great beer together.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Co., a craft brewer located in St. Louis, MO has purchased a small brewery in Florian Kuplent’s (Urban Chestnut’s Co-Founder & Brewmaster) homeland of Bavaria and plans to brew small batches of their beers in Germany.

Bürgerbräu Wolnzach, a small brewery located in the town of Wolnzach, Hallertau, recently closed its doors which provided Urban Chestnut the opportunity to do something they had always hoped was possible…own and operate a brewery in Germany. Wolnzach, which is situated in the world’s largest producing region of hops, Hallertau Bavaria, is also the home of The German Hops Museum.

“Since my apprenticeship as a teenager at Erharting Brauerei, I’ve always dreamed of owning my own brewery in Bavaria,” said Kuplent. “I’m thinking we might be a little crazy opening our third brewery in 5 years, which is much sooner than we planned, but the Wolnzach opportunity was too good to pass up.”

Urban Chestnut has been exporting small quantities of beer to Germany since 2013. Fellow Co- Founder, David Wolfe believes the marketing opportunities the new brewery provides are very substantial, “In considering different ways to grow Urban Chestnut in Germany and in Europe as a whole, we believe the U.S. craft beer model of ‘local’ is a more than viable strategy. Actually owning and operating a brewery in Bavaria will provide us with a solid platform for growth via direct interaction with local beer drinkers and with beer drinkers visiting the Hallertau region during their beer pilgrimages.”

Urban Chestnut plans to open the brewery in Wolnzach a bit later in 2015. And while the new brewery will be the smallest of the three UCBC breweries, it will carry a big load. The Wolnzach operation will be utilized to brew beers to distribute in Europe as well as to brew unique, German-brewed beers to export to the U.S. It will also act as the central point of operations for the importing/exporting of raw materials, beer, and other goods to and from the U.S. Urban Chestnut currently receives weekly container shipments of raw materials, their standard .5L Euro bottles, and other goods from Germany.

“I’m really looking forward to the synergies we will realize and the fun we will have importing & exporting beer back and forth from the U.S. and Germany…I’m more than anxious to get the Urban Chestnut Brauerei up and running!” exclaimed Kuplent.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

The wait is finally OVER! The new Urban Chestnut Sampler Pack, featuring FOUR first-time bottled biers (three are brand-new brews) will be hitting the shelves this week. Look for it wherever craft beer is sold.

Here’s what you’ll find in the Reverence vs. Revolution Sampler Pack:

Fantasyland: – Noun; a place or circumstance existing only in the imagination or as an ideal; dream world. Origin – Midwest “Coast” of the United States. Need we say more?!

SLIPILS: S-aint L-ouis I-mperial PILS – Spelled backwards or forwards it’s the same. And it’s not your typical Pilsner, it’s more prodigious (maltier), it’s more audacious (hoppier), it’s less delicate, it’s Imperial…it’s SLIPILS to be exact.

Stammtisch: Stammtisch is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis – more directly translating into “table for regulars”. Our Stammtisch was brewed to celebrate this idea of community and socializing. It’s a traditional German-style Pilsner featuring a blend of Hallertau and Strisselspalt hops, and we think it’s the perfect accompaniment to any social gathering.

H.M.S: To recreate a traditional IPA in the proper English fashion, we brewed this beer with all English hops, East Kent Goldings, and all English malts, Maris Otter. As such, this IPA is much like British troops would have enjoyed in India in the late 1700′s. However, we must admit a shortcoming…we were not able to sail this beer on any of Her (or His at this time) Majesty’s Ships before reaching its final destination.

As reported in Alive Magazine, Urban Chestnut won three gold medals and a bronze medal last week at the 18th Annual Great International Beer & Cider Competition in Providence, Rhode Island.

St. Louis, MO – This past spring Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC), a St. Louis, MO craft brewery founded and operated by two former Anheuser-Busch employees, Florian Kuplent and David Wolfe, opened their second brewery, Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall, located in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, aka The Grove.

While their new brewery boasts an impressive 450 person bierhall, replete with a full-service kitchen, their primary purpose for building the second facility was to expand Urban Chestnut’s brewing capacity, and ultimately provide the brewery with the ability to increase its distribution footprint. With about 20,000 bbls of annual brewing capacity now on-line, Urban Chestnut is preparing to open up new markets, beginning with Columbia & Jefferson City, MO this week and Kansas City, MO later in the year.

“We’ve been more than eager to supply our beer to these markets for some time now.  Columbia’s a natural extension of the St. Louis beer market, Jefferson City is obviously our state’s capital, and Kansas City…plain and simple knows good beer,” Wolfe comments.

Although the third largest craft brewery producing and selling beer in the state of Missouri, Urban Chestnut had been constrained by its capacity and was limited in distributing their beers primarily to the St. Louis metro area.

“Up until now, we haven’t been able to fully open up new markets outside of the St. Louis market.  As a matter of fact, we were just able to open Jefferson County, with H.W. Herrell Distributing Co. in June, which completed the STL metro-area footprint for us,” says Jon Shine, Urban Chestnut’s Head of Sales Operations, “So the realization that it’s only a matter of time, not a function of capacity, before we can begin distributing our beer to the entire state of Missouri is a satisfying feeling.”

Urban Chestnut will be partnering with N.H. Scheppers Distributing Co. to distribute their beers in Columbia and Jefferson City, MO beginning this week. And for the first time, UCBC will be partnering with a non-ABI wholesaler, Major Brands, to distribute their beers in the Kansas City, MO area.

N. H. Scheppers Distributing Company, founded in 1950 by Norb Scheppers, acquired the distribution rights to sell Anheuser-Busch products for Boone and Callaway Counties in 1952. Two years later, the territory was expanded to include Cole, Osage, most of Moniteau and a portion of Miller Counties. The company, with offices in Columbia and Jefferson City, recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary as a distributor of Anheuser-Busch products. From its humble beginnings as a one-person operation, N.H. Scheppers Distributing Company has grown into a multi-faceted operation with over 60 employees dedicated to serving our customers and the community. NHSDC has set the standard for beverage distribution in Mid-Missouri, operating 15 delivery routes, and warehouse facilities in Columbia and Jefferson City to ensure prompt delivery and consistent availability of the freshest beer in the industry for our customers.

Major Brands is a leading Missouri distributor of premium spirits, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, and the largest distributor that remains Missouri-owned and operated. With offices in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia and Cape Girardeau, Major Brands employs more than 500 people and serves more than 9,000 retail customers throughout the state. Major Brands represents an outstanding product portfolio that ranges from the leading global brands to locally produced craft beers, distilled spirits and Missouri wines.

Urban Chestnut won three GOLD medals and one BRONZE medal last week at the 18th Annual Great International Beer & Cider Competition in Providence, Rhode Island.

Urban Chestnut won 3 GOLD medals in 3 different categories at the North American Beer Awards last week:

Gold       Aramis Pils           German-Style Pilsner

Gold       Pierre’s Wit         Belgian-Style Wit (White)

Gold       Maximilian          Weizen Bock

Check out the full results here.

“The North American Beer Awards, held in conjunction with the Mountain Brewers Beer Fest, is a unique event sanctioned by the North American Brewers Association. The competition provides an opportunity for commercially produced beers to be judged against the best beers in the country. The event is conducted as a single blind sampling followed by rank ordering of the entries within a category.

Awards consisting of commemorative Gold, Silver, and Bronze medallions cast with the logo of the North American Brewers Association and the North American Beer Awards are presented annually.”

Spring is here…it’s finally here!!!  After a LOOOONG, LOOOONG Winter… it’s here, it’s here, it’s here!!! And so in our annual tradition* Urban Chestnut is going to celebrate Spring’s arrival, aka

Maifest 2014

Saturday, May 10th from 1-5pm @ our Midtown Brewery & Biergarten

Urban Chestnut’s Maifest will feature a couple of Bavarian favorites for this time of year:

Bockbiers** & Biergartens***

We’ll be rolling out and tapping our first barrels of Bockbiers and we’ll be officially throwing our first biergarten party of the season.

No tix required.  $10 will buy you a commemorative Urban Chestnut Maifest glass and discounted re-fills of Bockbiers.

Maifest 2014 will also feature live music and BBQ.

For more details, please refer to the Maifest 2014 poster on the left…

*Maifest is one of mankind’s oldest traditions, the celebration of nature’s bright reawakening after Winter’s long, cold darkness. At some point, what was an ancient pagan festival took on Christian religious significance and is now a colorful, joyous part of history and culture that is celebrated annually, not only in Bavaria, but in many towns around the world.

** Bockbiers are traditionally enjoyed in Bavaria as the ideal biers to enjoy during the brief Spring transition (the period between the cold, snowy Winters and the balmy, sun-drenched Summers) along the northern Alps. Bockbiers are essentially strong lager beers of German origin.  We’ll be featuring three bockbiers at our Maifest…a Weizenbock – Maximillian, a Pale Wheat Doppelbock- Erlkönig, and of course our annual Maibock – Urbanator.

*** In 2012 Urban Chestnut opened our Midtown Biergarten; a large Bavarian-style biergarten lined with German tables, benches and umbrellas.  The idea was/is simple, we want to provide an outdoor destination to gather and converse over a beer, a pretzel and/or a brat and to recreate the feel of the communal atmosphere of what has existed in Bavaria for centuries and what was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s a large part of St. Louis’ Spring, Summer & Fall routine.

*For you newbies… a wolpertinger is a small (or large depending on your perspective), primarily nocturnal mammal that inhabits the alpine forests of Bavaria. He’s quite rare, but we annually work with our hop growers in Hallertau to ‘import’ one of the little fellas for the special occasion. Mostly nocturnal, our“Wolpie” makes his grand appearance at the back end of the festival, which also coincides with our very limited release of his namesake UCBC beer. This year our special release, is an ale aged in red wine barrels from California’s Roth Estate vineyard for several months.  So far the result from the first barrel we sampled is a dry, fruity, similar to a Flemish Brown (although less tart), approximately 9.0% ABV Ale.  We will be pouring draught samples & plan to release some bottles of Wolpie as well.

We hope to see you there…and remember, as always, “best-dressed Wolpertingers” will be rewarded!

Prost!

PS January 26th is also Florian’s 40th birthday!

St. Louis, MO – Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC), a two-year old St. Louis, MO craft brewery, has announced they are in the planning stages to open a second and significantly larger production brewery also located in the city of Saint Louis.

The new facility is expected to be a $10MM project increasing Urban Chestnut’s current annual brewing capacity to about 15,000 barrels, while further enhancing an area within the City of St. Louis that has undergone significant transformation over the last several years (Forest Park Southeast, aka “The Grove”). The UCBC project will add approximately 10 full-time and 30 part-time jobs in the City of St. Louis within the next two years. Projected to open in early 2014, UCBC is partnering with Green Street St. Louis (Green Street), an innovative real estate firm recognized for the sustainable redevelopment of underutilized St. Louis-area commercial properties into LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings.

The two former Anheuser-Busch veterans and co-founders of Urban Chestnut, Florian Kuplent and David Wolfe, have been working with Green Street for over a year to identify a property that would meet their collective vision. A vision resulting in the plan to renovate the former Renard Paper Company at 4465 Manchester Ave into a 70,000 square foot production brewery, packaging facility, warehouse and indoor/outdoor retail taste room. Beyond embracing the principles of environmental stewardship and social responsibility by seeking LEED certification, UCBC & Green Street also plan to modify the façade of the current city-block long warehouse to visibly and physically integrate it into the already vibrant “The Grove” neighborhood.

“People might ask why open a second facility and ALSO locate it in St. Louis? Well, first & foremost 95% of the beer we sold last year was in St. Louis, and like Schlafly and many of the other small brewers located here in St. Louis, we’re dedicated to the evolution of St. Louis as a craft beer destination,” remarked Wolfe.

Kuplent added, “We’ve been growing at about 200%, year over year, and we never imagined we’d grow this fast. Essentially it means we’re going to run out of the space to add further capacity at our current location sometime this year…and we mostly have St. Louis beer drinkers and our retail partners to thank for that!”

Operationally, Urban Chestnut plans to brew, package and sell beer at BOTH locations:

  • The current 20 barrel brew house, taste room and Biergarten, located at 3229 Washington Ave in Midtown St. Louis, will remain open and will be utilized to primarily test, brew, and package smaller batch beers.
  • Initially the new brewery will have an annual capacity of approximately 15,000 barrels using a 60 barrel brewhouse, with the space to expand to 100,000 bbls.

Urban Chestnut brewed around 3500 bbls in 2012 and expects to brew approximately 7000 bbls in 2013.

In addition to utilizing both breweries tactically, Wolfe and Kuplent also plan to provide a unique & distinctive customer experience at each Urban Chestnut location. “Our brewing philosophy and branding has always been based on the idea of ‘new world ~ old world’ or what we call ‘Revolution and ‘Reverence’. We think it’s really cool that we’re going to apply this same concept to each of the two facilities; our original location will possess the “Reverence” identity and our new location the “Revolution” identity,” says Wolfe.

Urban Chestnut and Green Street plan to implement design and material elements that will award them with a level of LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. “Our collective goal is to renovate the building and introduce mechanisms that maximize the efficiency of Urban Chestnut operations while minimizing their impact on the environment,” stated Hulse. “Generally speaking, we intend to employ ‘green’ modifications to minimize Urban Chestnut’s energy footprint.”

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC) is an unconventional-minded yet tradition-oriented brewer of craft beer. Founded in early 2011 and located at 3229 Washington Avenue in Midtown St. Louis, it brews both small batches of artisanal, modern American beers (their Revolution series) and classically-crafted European styles (their Reverence series). The founders are Florian Kuplent and David Wolfe. Kuplent is a German born and trained brewmaster with extensive experience at both small breweries, worldwide, and with the world’s largest, Anheuser-Busch. Wolfe is a 20-year beer industry member, who was with Anheuser-Busch as well, prior to joining Kuplent in founding Urban Chestnut.

What’s so special about this variety pack you say?!  Well, just like our previous two UCBC variety pack releases this Revolution Orange and Reverence Blue beauty has four windows (holes) that allow you to see the eight, necked(not naked) bottles of beer that together weigh about 16 pounds.  And if that’s not special enough for you, wrap your melon around this:  Besides finding two bottles each of Winged Nut Chestnut Ale and Zwickel Unfiltered Bavarian Lager inside the little fellas, the thrill-seeking, variety-loving, thirsty men and women who take the leap and make the purchase will enjoy two more bottles each of…wait for it…

Oachkatzlscwhoaf Oktoberfest Lager – That’s right! For the first time ever, we are bottling this “export” style lager, brewed for our annual Oktoberfest celebration- a malty yet well balanced bier much like the bier traditionally served at Oktoberfest in Munich, and our fest bier has a tale/tail of its own (Oachkatzlschwoaf translated is “tail of a squirrel”… just a little Bavarian humor….and I do mean a little). (Label shown to the left)

…AND wait for it again…

Count Orlok Black Pumpkin Ale – That’s right (again)! For the first time ever (again), Urban Chestnut is brewing a pumpkin beer and while it is officially a Revolution Series beer, it does have a little German flare- Nosferatu (Bird of Death), aka Count Orlok was THE German Count Dracula. He was a blood-sucking vampire… but being German he must’ve enjoyed beer too, right? We believe it is so and thus have created a Black Pumpkin Wheat Ale in his honor… a bier noir if you will. (Label shown to the left)

So when exactly is “coming again soon”? By our clock, which may be (is) slightly off, we’re looking at the first week of Septemberish.  But…we promise we’ll “social mediate”(FB/Twitter) it to you as soon as it’s released.
