Ta Da!

Winged Nut Euro Bottle

Zwickel Euro Bottle

The day is almost here! In case you missed the announcement in Evan Benn’s “Hip Hops”, or didn’t see the ad in DRAFT magazine, our bottles will be hitting the streets soon (by ‘soon’ we mean sometime in the next few weeks pending final set-up of our bottling line).

And here’s what’s coming:

Winged Nut 4-packs of Euro Bottles (pint-sized)
Zwickel 4-packs of Euro Bottles (pint-sized)

FYI… we’re a bit geeked-up about using Euro Bottles imported from Germany. Why?

Their usage further expresses our philosophy of “Beer Divergency” (‘unconventional minded yet tradition oriented brewing’ for you newer Nutjobs), expressing Reverence and Revolution, simultaneously. In other words by packaging our beer in a German NR/Euro Bottle, a traditional bottle used in Germany over the years (Reverence), and by featuring it in a 4-pack format (Revolution), we’re doing something traditional and little different both at the same time. And that’s geeky to us!

As far as availability, our initial plans are to obviously sell them ‘to-go’ at our taste room and then to work with the independent beer/wine shops around town (St. Louis City & County only for now), and to hit some of the more beer-centric grocery stores as well. Eventually, we’d like to get our bottles in bars and restaurants, but we’re going to hold off on that until we have a better understanding of our ‘production-married-to-distribution’ capabilities, i.e. until we figure out what the hell we’re doing.

Regardless, we’re definitely jazzed that the beer drinkers of St. Louis will have more opportunities to find and drink our beers. We hope this news excites you as well…Happy New Year!

Prost!

p.s. Sorry, but you’re going to have to work your “three-dimensional” imagination on the ‘flat art’ 4-packs for now.
p.p.s. Bottle shots- Greg Rannells…thanks Greg!

Winged Nut 'Flat Art' 4-pack

Zwickel 'Flat Art' 4-pack

Happy Anniversary… soon… Wolpertinger 2012!

Date : Saturday- February 4th, 2012- 1pm to 6pm

Event Overview: As a birthday present to ourselves, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company- UCBC, proudly announces “Wolpertinger 2012”- a celebration of the spirit of craft beer and community.  This soon-to-be (in about one year) annual festival will be a gathering of St. Louis area craft brewers, each featuring some of their special creations.  Mostly though, it’ll be a party honoring the St. Louis craft beer scene with UCBC sprinkling in a little birthday fun, aka “Wolpertinger”.

For those of you unfamiliar with the wolpertinger; it is a small (or large depending on your perspective), primarily nocturnal mammal that inhabits the alpine forests of Bavaria. It is quite rare, but we’ve managed to work with of our hop growers in Hallertau and they’ve helped us to ‘import’ one of the little fellas for the special occasion. Being nocturnal, “Wolpie” will be making his grand appearance at the back end of the festival, which will coincide with our very limited release of his UCBC namesake “Wolpertinger 2012”, which we intimately refer to as Winged Nut on Acid, a 9.0% ABV, chestnut ale aged on Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels.

Event Details: $30 ticket purchase will get you “Der Boot” (your sampling glass) and into the tent, literally, to enjoy 3 oz samples of some of the finest craft beers from the St. Louis area’s many distinguished brewers, 2 tickets to sample Wolpertinger 2012 when he appears in the early evening hours, and generally speaking, a pass to the first year of an event we hope captures the spirit of craft beer in St. Louis.  For the more adventurous lot of you, we have something special in mind…  the “best-costumed Wolpertingers” will each get a prize or prizes to be determined.  So for you “wannabe furries” out there (you know who you are), we say go for it!!!

Prost!

Celebrations Galore!!!

Wait…what…you’re posting a blog?!  Yes sort of…it’s more of a pared down version of our newsletter than it is a witty post.  To wit:

We’ve got two new beers on the way- Bären Weisse, a subtle-flavored strawberry wheat beer, perfect for this hot weather and Δ Hop, an IPA dry-hopped with the hybrid hop Delta (a cross between Cascade and Fuggles), providing it with a slightly spicy and citrusy note. Both of these beers will be available in the taste room and in limited quantities with some of our retail partners next month.  In addition, we’ll be releasing some casks in August and for those of you who are fans of Zucker Weisse, our Berliner Weisse, we’ve re-released a couple of kegs and it’s as refreshing as ever (with our without the syrup) and will be available until we run out.

-  “The Bottles are coming!” (said the “original man of Reverence”, Paul Revere) - Can’t give you a date yet, but we’ll be making an announcement regarding UCBC bottles in the next 30 days or so.

-  STLCBW / St. Louis Craft Beer Week – YESSS!!!  This is a very, very good thing for the community of STL beer drinkers, beer purveyors and brewers.  There’s lots going on STLCBWcalendar …  Specifically though here’s what’s going on with UCBC:

 1) We are partnering with The Royale on Mon., 8/1 for “UCBC Δ Hop Cask Night” They are releasing our first cask of ” Δ Hop” that evening.  They are also conducting a local tap takeover featuring 7-10 local craft beers.

 2) We are collaborating with Schlafly, The Wine Merchant, and The Wine and Cheese Place on Tues, 8/2 for a Beer & Cheesing Pairing @ The Tap Room.

 3) @ UCBC on Fri, 8/5, to celebrate “International Beer Day” we will be having an event we are calling “Zwickel Vom Fass”, a night featuring a cask of “Zwickel” and likely a dry-hopped cask of “Delta Hop”, a keep the glass special, and live music from the “Bar Room Troubadours”, who will hopefully be playing outdoors (if the weather cooperates) in our parking lot converted into a beer garden for the evening.  Cask(s) will be released and the glassware special begins at 5pm.  Music begins at approx. 7pm.

4) You will also find our beers during the Missouri Tap Takeovers at both I-Taps and @The Bridge and The Royale during “½ off STL brews”, as well as a cask or two(tbd) at I-Tap Soulard’s “Firkin Fest” on 8/6.

- Feast Day @ The Royale – More details to follow on this really cool event hosted by The Royale, but for now let it be known that UCBC and The Royale are collaborating to brew a Farmhouse Ale, “Apotheosis”, released @ The Royale during their “Feast Day” event on 8/25.

- Oktoberfests (plural) 2011- UCBC will be hosting its third festival of the year, Oktoberfest, in late September (Fri thru Sat, 9/24-25 to be precise…and yes it is in September…Munich Oktoberfest actually kicks off  a week earlier on 9/17).  Again, more details to come, but think German music, German food, German steins,  and of course German beer.  Ditto that thought, but on a MUCH, MUCH larger scale and you’ll find UCBC with one of the featured tents at Soulard’s 2011 Oktoberfest website in early Oct (10/7-9).

Well that’s just a small snapshot of what’s coming up over the next couple of months.  There’s a lot more going on for UCBC and beerdom in general, in and somewhat around St. Louis, i.e., Great Taste of Midwest, Hop in The City, GABF, Augusta Bottoms, Fresh Hop Fest.  And those are just some of the festivals.  Don’t forget there are four new breweries of various shapes and sizes on the horizon too… “Exit 6”, “Perennial”, “Civil Life”, and “Four Hands”.  Congrats everyone!!!  Anyways, you get the idea…we are in the midst of many a beer celebration…so celebrate on!

 Prost!

It’s Springtime and we’re going to celebrate it German-style, aka Maifest 2011!

Maifest is one of mankind’s oldest traditions, the celebration of nature’s bright reawakening after winter’s cold darkness. The ancient pagan festival later took on Christian religious significance but is now a colorful, joyous part of history and culture.

Not to oversimplfy tradition and heritage…….but at UCBC we’re just going to celebrate Maifest with an outdoor (hopefully) party and beer!   Particulary Bockbier.

Bavarian’s favor Maibock  (literally: May Bock – a strong, golden lager) during the brief  Spring transiition between the severe winters along the northern edge of the Alps, when people hunker down indoors, and the hot summers, when people flock to the biergartens.  However, Florian has tweaked our Maibock slightly and we’ll be celebrating Maifest with a Weizenbock (wheat beer bock) and maybe another Bockbier as well….maybe.

Anyways…we’re having  Maifest 2011 on Sunday, May 15, 1-5-pm  it’s:

Open to the Public (no tickets)

- We’ll be featuring BBQ from Pappy’s, Dusty,  and UCBC

- Live Music  will be jamming

-All of UCBC’s beers will flowing but our Weizenbock will be the special

-Commerative glassware

-Commerative t-shirts

If you want to know a little more about Bockbier read on….otherwise we hope to see you at Maifest 2011…Prost!

More on Bockbier:

In much of Bavaria, including Munich, breweries produce different beers for the different seasons. Because Bavaria has a continental climate, the difference between summer and winter tends to be extreme. Correspendingly, the seasonal variations in Bavaria’s brews are extremes, too…and no beer style follows the changing seasons more closely than the Bockbier, Munich’s strong, malty lager. There is a Bockbier for every time of year, except summer, when the straw-blond Munich Helles becomes the signature beer garden brew.

Let’s Go Corporate!

Not really, but what’s more corporate than a ‘Pressed Two-Piece’….maybe a ‘Press Release’?!  Lame…I know… but you come up with a superior rhyme for What’s more corporate than a “Press Release”?  Go on I dare you and no….”Dressed Fleece” is not corporate.

Anyways….we’re going corporate, i.e. utilizing a “Press Release” as we announce the beginning of our draught distribution in St. Louis.  You can read all of  the corporate BS below  or you can  just celebrate the fact that we are beginning draught distribution of Winged Nut and Zwickel, today, April 7, 2011 to St. Louis area (MO only) bars and restaurants….YESSSS!!!!

Urban Chestnut Brewing Co Launches Draught Distribution in St. Louis, MO

April 7, 2011

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC), a self-professed unconventional-minded yet tradition-oriented brewer of craft beer, which opened its taste room in late January, has finally (after a whopping 2 plus months) begun distributing draught beer to bars and restaurants in the St. Louis area (MO only for now).

Initially, UCBC is offering two beers on draught behind its brewing philosophy of Beer Divergency —a ‘new world meets old world’ brewing approach wherein UCBC contributes to the ‘revolution’ of craft beer through artisanal creations of modern American beers, and pays ‘reverence’ to the heritage of beer with classically-crafted offerings of timeless, European beer styles.

The first beer available to St. Louis retailers under its Revolution Series is ‘Winged Nut’- A beer UCBC affectionately refers to as their unusual little bird. It’s a little on the flighty side @ 5.7% ABV, and it’s a little on the wacky side because it’s brewed with finely milled chestnuts (genus castanea …for you nut freaks), Willamette hops, and fermented with a Bavarian Weissbier yeast strain. All of these nuances contribute to its ‘nutty’ personality.  5.7% ABV, IBU’s – 25, OG – 13.0 Plato.

The first beer available to St. Louis retailers under its Reverence Series is ‘Zwickel’- UCBC’s flagship lager (pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’), an unfiltered, unpasteurized, German classic (Unfiltered Helles) that finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy bier. Hops: Hallertau Malts: Two-Row Pilsner.  ABV – 5.1%, IBU’s – 18, OG – 12.1 Plato.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company is a locally-owned craft brewery in St. Louis, founded and managed by two beer industry veterans; Florian Kuplent- a German born and studied brewmaster with extensive experience at small breweries and with the world’s largest brewer, and David Wolfe- a fellow brewing industry expert, who share a common ambition to be a consistent and meaningful contributor to the vibrant, growing craft beer culture and general community of St. Louis. UCBC brews small batches of both artisanal, modern American beers and classically-crafted European styles via its state-of-the-art 20 bbl brewhouse.  UCBC beers are also available in its adjoining taste room and outdoor biergarten, where patrons can experience UCBC beers alongside small food pairings, five days a week; Tues- Sat ~ 11am til close (usually around midnight during the week and 1am on the weekends).

Urban Chestnut Brewing Co, 3229 Washington Ave St. Louis, MO 63103
